FIFA 2014 – Go Ghana Go

FIFA 2014! With soccer mania in full swing I’ve pulled out my Ghana Black Stars jersey. I must admit I am not a true soccer fan - I really don’t know the first thing about the game, but watching Ghana play brings back such great memories. I can share in the excitement I know my friends, who are 11 000km away, are feeling.

The guys at my office do their best to explain the rules to me, talking a little slower and with simplified language, so I am slowly catching on. I shouldn’t say I don’t know anything … I do know getting the ball in the net is the object of the game, and really, what more does one need to know? Oh, and I also know Ghana has the coolest jerseys, super stylish … yay team!

In 2008 I was in Ghana during the Africa Cup of Nations and Ghana happened to be hosting the games that year. The excitement in the air was incredible; national pride for sports teams is universal. One night we were out front at our host’s home watching a match between Ghana and Nigeria, huddled around a very tiny, very old TV with about 25 to 30 other neighbours. Ghana won and the streets erupted! The party reminded me of the Red Mile days in Calgary (hockey playoffs). Although some similarities, it was also very different as the streets filled with all ages, dancing and singing with such joy, true Ghanaian style that I have not experienced elsewhere. It was such a thrill to witness and be part of the celebrations. Definitely ranks as one of my travel highlights.

Six years later I find myself watching the Black Stars play again. This time on my computer screen at work in Canada and once again, I am literally on the edge of my seat. Instantly I’m transported back to that night in Ghana huddled around the tiny TV.

Go Ghana Go!!!
